Mount Wachusett is a bit further from the city, but on weekends you can take the MBTA commuter rail train to a stop near by and then ride a shuttle bus to the mountains. They have beginner packages that include rentals, lift and lesson. As for clothing ... cheap and ski clothing are rarely seen in the same sentence.

A good winter coat (wool or ski jacket), hat, scarf and gloves or mittens as not only can it be cold and snowy, but the wind can whip bitterly through the streets and as a tourist you may be doing a lot of walking.
Yes, I plan on coming back in 2 years around the warmer months, but was still tossing the coin on doing Boston in this trip or not. Humidity isn't an issue as we live in one of the hottest states in Australia (Queensland) when the weather never drops below 14 degrees in Winter (57F) and the daily average throughout the year is always in the 20s (70F) with Humidity always above 75%.
