My husband has been wearing OrthoK lenses for about 10 years and he usually takes a few low power disposable contacts -0.50, -0.75,-1.00 to use if he misses too many nights. If something happens and you can't wear lenses at all (infection etc) then you can get a pair of basic glasses made up quickly and cheaply in any major city.
I managed to buy some contract lenses in Italy a few years ago. I also have astigmatism and a very strong prescription (-7.5 in one eye and -6.0 in the other) so I wasn’t too confident of getting them but as I was there for the week, they could have been ordered in but fortunately they had a box for each eye in stock.
Many places offer a free exam but as for the contacts themselves I don't think you'll find the price much difference than at home. Depending on where you go it could take 5-10 days to get them. There are places that offer same day service but it will be much more expensive.
