If you want to avoid driving into Sevierville and Pigeon Forge on hwy 441/parkway, you can take I-40 to Newport TN and get on hwy 411 then turn on Veterans Parkway to Dollywood Lane to traffic light #8. Turn left on hwy 441/parkway. OR. Drive I-40 through Knoxville. Take exit for the airport/hwy 129 S.

Rich Mountain Road is gravel to the park boundary and goes towards Townsend. This would not be a route to use from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge.. Without knowing which direction you headed from Gatlinburg to Pigeon Forge, or even how direct the route was, it is hard to guess what route you might have taken, but I'm not aware of any "single lane" roads between the two.
