You do not incur any charge if you do not need it on a day or so and put it in airplane mode. If you only need it to make/receive calls you could use an internet based app.

EE are appalling. My work mobile uses EE and it's as much use as a chocolate teapot. I use O2 for my personal mobile and get much better coverage. The only caveat is that if you intend to spend much time in Canary Wharf, go with Vodafone (they're the only network provider that gets good coverage in the Wharf as they have a signal booster there).
