Some possible answers: --codeshare ( flight operated by another carrier with an AA flight number) --fare basis too low? --the flight is full/mostly full so they won't let you choose a seat in advance.

American Airlines has a better schedule with more points. I've never flown Copa. Since hubby and I both have knee issues, comfort is an issue (can't afford business).
